Piercing aftercare
Never touch your piercing with unclean hands while your piercing is still healing. This usually takes 6wks to 3 months. (for more info on healing times, click on any particular piercing below)
If you are having problems with your piercing, always come back and see us for professional advice.
Swelling can be extremely problematic if left – always go to back to you piercer for advice, as this problem can often be easily remedied by replacement with a longer or larger piece of sterile jewellery, until your piercing returns to normal.

Our goal is to conduct your piercing in a safe and sterile environment, and we attempt to do this as quickly, comfortably and as painlessly as possible.
We believe that performing the piercing in a safe and professional manner is only half the job – provision of aftercare instruction and ongoing professional advice at all times following the piercing is important to us
If in doubt – go back to your piercer!
Please remember that we will conduct your piercing professionally, in sterile conditions. Once you leave our premises, it is up to YOU to maintain the integrity of your piercing. And remember – Some piercings are just not suitable for some people – it is not the piercers fault, it is not the customers fault, it just is!
Finally, most piercers will perform piercings in a safe and professional manner – it is often not fair to blame the piercer if your piercing has been unsuccessful. There can be many reasons why your piercing was unsuccessful, among them the following:
- Your immune system
- Your level of care
- The aftercare product you are using
- The area of your body that was pierced
Be honest – did you care for your piercing to the best of your ability?
Did you get enough info to care for your piercing properly?
These issues are YOUR responsibility
Tongue Piercing Aftercare
Usually, the tongue will swell to the length of your jewellery, and this lasts for roughly 7 days. Expect to be on a crash diet for the first week or so! Eat whatever is comfortable, however it is advisable to avoid chilli, hot curries, etc. If your tongue is swollen it is still trying to heal – please follow these instructions during the entire healing period which is generally between 5 – 10 days. Mouthwash/gargle after meals and cigarettes or MINIMUM 6 times daily Warm salty water as a gargle is HIGHLY recommended and, we believe, is superior to any store-bought products. Please adhere to the following:
NO contact with body fluids (oral sex) for six weeks.
NO kissing for at least one week.
NO beer – other alcohol is OK.
NO playing with your jewellery while the piercing is trying to heal – it only slows down the healing process.
Lots of ice and/or cold drinks taken in the first day or two of getting pierced may help reduce the amount of swelling you experience, as well as being soothing. Take Panadol for the pain if required.
After Swelling Has Ended
Change down to a shorter barbell to prevent chomping on your tongue bar as this is what chips your teeth. Brush your jewellery as well as your teeth to prevent plaque build-up. Replace immediately with a longer bar if there is any sign re-swelling. Always keep your jewellery in to prevent the piercing from closing.
